? OF THE DAY IS THE MOVIE WAR OF THE WORLDS A RELIGIOUS MOVIE IN THE SAME SCOPE AS BENHUR OR KING OF KINGS? I WATCHED THE LAST 15MIN OF WAR OF THE WORLDS LAST NIGHT AND THERE WAS A LOT OF GOD IN IT. IS IT REALY A MOVE ABOUT FAITH ? OR IS IT SCI FI?. OR WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MANKIND THINKS TOO MUCH OF ITSELF

I'll take that any day over mankind not thinking enough of itself (as is the prevalent mindset in theism)...

It's H.G. Wells being all sci-fi but injecting an early 20th Century dose of good old religion into the demise of the aliens from Mars.
While the martians themselves do not represent God, I'm sure there are those who might say they are presented as demons.
And as naive as it might seem today, it makes a huge point out of asking us to "just think...an ordinary virus" is all it took to wipe them out. Makes it appear they were killed by something that only bothers us a little bit!!! But ole H.G. never heard of shifting antigens...he never imagined SARS or Ebola or any of the other extremely contagious and deadly viruses that nature can serve up.
Dogbelle...this story/movie is nowhere near being along the same lines as the films you asked about. It is not a religious epic.

That seemed to be a running theme in many of George Pal's films.
"When Worlds Collide" concludes with Old Testamant "Noah's Ark" scripture.
The general in "Conquest of Space" seems to have a real religious obsession, plus some other references that escape me.
At the end of "The Time Machine," we're left to wonder what books George took back to the future, and I always imagined one was the Bible.

DOGBELLE: It's been many years since I read the unabridged WOTW novel and commentary on it, but basically Wells was inspired to write WOTW because of his disapproval of European colonialism, particularly England's. The Martian invasion of a vastly inferior race, man, symbolizes England's subjugation of many inferior societies worldwide, particularly Tasmania. His idea of what awaited Europe's colonial powers was symbolized by the Martians' failed invasion. Also, the soldier in the novel, who vowed to continue fighting the Martians even though his military had been virtually wiped out by the superior Martian weapons technology, was supposed to reflect man's spirit to survive against all odds against evil. The religious man, more concerned with his own personal survival and not of his fellow man, was supposed to reflect Wells' disapproval of self-serving religious movements (Victorian England's versions of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson). The Martian invasion being defeated by earth bacteria reflects his belief that, in the long run, the universe is God's creation, and he will assure the triumph of good over evil. By the way, WOTW is the best sci-fi I've read. I hope the two movie remakes in production will be faithful to the novel. But since we're talking about Hollywood.....

MICHAEL WARE: Assuming your post is disagreeing with my post, those interpretations of WOTW are not mine, but are those by H.G. Wells scholars, etc. Example, the symbolism of Tasmania is from Wells and his brother. If you disagree with Wells and his brother, take a trip in HG's time machine, set the dials back about 110 years and that way you can disagree with the source himself. However, don't set the dials forward because you might be dinner for the Morlocks.....I just hope for the Morlocks' sake that paregoric still exists.

To clarify my post about two WOTW films.....one is being made by Paramount studios which released the George Pal film 50 years ago in 1953. It appears Tom Cruise will direct WOTW for Paramount. The other remake by an independent studio in Seattle appears to be in limbo. I hope Paramount saw the results of THE TIME MACHINE remake and will remain faithful to the novel. You shouldn't tamper with perfection.

I always thought WOTW had a bizarre religious angle. It's OK for the Martians to kill millions, but when they break the window of a church, God whacks them. Hey, thanks for nothing, God! Glad we mean so much to you!
